Advocating for patient access to medical cannabis in Georgia.

DPH is now using Medical Cannabis and Medical Cannabis Patient Registry language, and its current patient information says qualified patients/caregivers may legally possess up to 12,000 mg THC or medical cannabis.
DPH’s current qualifying-condition list also now includes Lupus, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, HIV Stage III, and revised cancer wording.

SB 220, also known as the Putting Georgia’s Patients First Act, updates Georgia’s medical cannabis framework and shifts the public program language from Low THC Oil Registry toward Medical Cannabis Patient Registry.
These changes are important for patients, caregivers, physicians, community partners, and advocacy organizations because Georgia’s program is moving away from the older low THC oil language and into a broader medical cannabis patient registry structure.
Patients and caregivers should continue to verify current procedures through the Georgia Department of Public Health before applying, renewing, purchasing, possessing, or using medical cannabis products.
• PROGRAM NAME UPDATED
The state program language is changing from Low THC Oil Registry to Medical Cannabis Patient Registry.
This matters because patients, caregivers, physicians, and community partners may still see older language on documents, cards, websites, or public materials during the transition.
• LOW THC OIL LANGUAGE UPDATED
SB 220 updates Georgia law by replacing many references to low THC oil with medical cannabis.
This helps modernize the program language and better reflects the way patients and providers discuss medical cannabis access.
• 12,000 MG THC POSSESSION FRAMEWORK
Georgia’s framework now allows qualified patients and caregivers to legally possess medical cannabis products containing a cumulative total of up to 12,000 milligrams of THC, as allowed under state law and DPH guidance.
Patients must still have active registry/card status and must follow all state requirements.
• 1,200 MG INDIVIDUAL PACKAGE CAP
SB 220 creates an individual package limit of no more than 1,200 milligrams of THC per package.
Patients and caregivers should check product labels carefully and only purchase from authorized access points.
• PHYSICAL OR ELECTRONIC CARD LANGUAGE
SB 220 allows for physical or electronic medical cannabis registration cards.
Patients should follow DPH instructions for current card processing, payment, renewal, and verification procedures.
• CAREGIVER PATHWAYS EXPANDED
The updated framework includes caregiver pathways for parents, guardians, legal custodians, designated adult caregivers, and certain qualifying health care institutions.
Caregivers must understand their role, follow state requirements, and only assist within the limits allowed under Georgia law.
• QUALIFYING CONDITION LANGUAGE UPDATED
The qualifying condition list has been updated. Current DPH language includes conditions such as lupus, inflammatory bowel disease, HIV Stage III, intractable pain, PTSD, seizure disorders, peripheral neuropathy, hospice care, and other approved conditions.
Patients should speak with a fully licensed Georgia physician to determine whether they qualify.
• PATIENT RESTRICTIONS STILL APPLY
Georgia’s medical cannabis program is still limited. Registration does not mean patients can use medical cannabis anywhere, grow cannabis at home, or avoid all workplace consequences.
• NO FULL LEGALIZATION
SB 220 does not make marijuana legal for everyone in Georgia.
Only physician-certified patients and authorized caregivers with active Medical Cannabis Patient Registry status may legally possess medical cannabis within the limits allowed by Georgia law.
• WORKPLACE PROTECTIONS REMAIN LIMITED
Registration does not prevent employer drug testing or guarantee workplace accommodation.
Patients should understand their employer’s policies and seek legal guidance when needed.
IMPORTANT PATIENT REMINDER
SB 220 expands and modernizes Georgia’s medical cannabis framework, but patients and caregivers must still follow DPH instructions, physician guidance, product limits, possession rules, and all state restrictions.
Medical cannabis access in Georgia still requires physician certification and active registry/card status.

Patients should begin by speaking with a fully licensed Georgia physician. If the physician determines the patient has a qualifying condition and medical cannabis may be appropriate, the physician submits the certification through the Medical Cannabis Patient Registry process.
After certification, the Georgia Department of Public Health reviews and verifies the information. If the information is complete, the patient receives instructions for payment and card processing.
Patients should follow current DPH instructions and maintain active card or registry status before possessing authorized medical cannabis products.
• TALK TO A GEORGIA PHYSICIAN
Discuss your diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, and whether you may qualify for Georgia’s Medical Cannabis Patient Registry.
• GET CERTIFIED
If appropriate, the physician certifies the qualifying condition through the state registry process. Physicians are not required to certify patients; the decision is based on medical judgment.
• COMPLETE REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS
Follow DPH instructions for payment, card processing, and any required information. Patients should watch for DPH emails or communication about next steps.
• RECEIVE CARD / ACCESS PRODUCTS
Maintain active card or registry status before possessing authorized medical cannabis products. Patients and caregivers should purchase only through authorized access points.
IMPORTANT PATIENT REMINDER
Having a qualifying condition alone does not automatically create legal access. Patients must be certified by a Georgia physician and entered into the state registry process before legally accessing medical cannabis in Georgia.
