Research & Evidence

Peer-reviewed science, clinical evidence, and policy analysis to help Georgia patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers make informed decisions about medical cannabis.

GMCS supports credible research and evidence-informed education about medical cannabis

Why Evidence Matters

GMCS is committed to evidence-based advocacy and education. We curate and summarize research from peer-reviewed journals, federal agencies, and leading academic institutions so that patients, caregivers, and providers have access to accurate, current information — without having to wade through the full scientific literature themselves. Our research resources are updated regularly as new evidence emerges.

Research Categories

Clinical Research

Peer-reviewed studies on the efficacy and safety of medical cannabis for specific conditions, including chronic pain, epilepsy, PTSD, multiple sclerosis, and other qualifying conditions under Georgia law.

Policy & Law

Analysis of Georgia's medical cannabis statutes, regulatory framework, and legislative history — including SB 219, SB 220, and federal rescheduling to Schedule III (April 22, 2026).

Pharmacology & Safety

Research on cannabinoid pharmacology, drug interactions, dosing considerations, contraindications, and safe use guidance for patients and providers.

Public Health

Population-level research on medical cannabis access, health equity, patient outcomes, and the public health implications of state medical cannabis programs.

Featured Research Topics

Clinical

Cannabis & Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is the most common qualifying condition in state medical cannabis programs. Research consistently shows cannabinoids — particularly CBD and THC combinations — can reduce pain intensity and improve quality of life for patients with neuropathic, inflammatory, and musculoskeletal pain.

Clinical

Cannabis & Epilepsy

CBD-based treatments have the strongest evidence base in cannabis medicine, with FDA-approved Epidiolex demonstrating significant seizure reduction in Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Georgia's registry includes intractable seizure disorders as a qualifying condition.

Clinical

Cannabis & PTSD

Emerging research supports the use of medical cannabis for PTSD symptom management, particularly for sleep disturbance, nightmares, and hyperarousal. PTSD is a qualifying condition under Georgia law.

Policy

Federal Rescheduling: Schedule III

On April 22, 2026, cannabis was rescheduled from Schedule I to Schedule III under the federal Controlled Substances Act. This landmark change has significant implications for research access, banking, taxation, and the future of state medical cannabis programs.

Policy

SB 220: What Changed in Georgia

Signed May 12, 2026, SB 220 expanded Georgia's medical cannabis program — adding qualifying conditions, authorizing new product forms, extending card validity, and allowing digital card acceptance. GMCS has published a full analysis of the law's provisions.

Pharmacology

Drug Interactions & Safety

Cannabis interacts with a range of commonly prescribed medications through the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. Providers and patients should review potential interactions — particularly with anticoagulants, antiepileptics, and immunosuppressants — before initiating medical cannabis.
